(Please note that Homebirthers are always welcome in my other homebirth-friendly classes)

Birth is a profound passage into parenthood for both a woman and her partner; and birthing at home gives us, mothers and partners alike, the space to find our own way through this extraordinary rite. But with this freedom comes a challenge to look deeply within and prepare.

Mindful Birth NY classes draw on some of the most exciting work in the field of childbirth preparation to help expectant mothers discover and develop their own visions of birth and work with effective relaxation and pain-coping strategies for labor. We also offer partners a rounded preparation for the intense work of supporting a woman in labor. This includes an understanding of the many paths a labor may take, practical ways to support a woman birthing at home, tips on working with any challenges that may arise, hands-on practice with massage and more.

Birthing at home also means that we have the opportunity to launch breastfeeding and parenting on our own terms. Mary Esther brings a relaxed, but evidence-based approach to breastfeeding and newborn care appropriate to homebirth.  Couples devote extra time to a Mindful Birth NY class, but given the magnitude of this passage into parenthood, it is time well spent.

Mary Esther Malloy is a Bradley certified childbirth educator, a DONA certified labor support doula, and a certified lactation counselor. She holds a B.A. from Oberlin College and a M.A. in Anthropology from New York University. In addition to teaching childbirth classes, attending births as a doula and raising her two sons and preparing to birth her third baby this fall, Mary Esther facilitates new mother support groups and teaches Baby Care and Breastfeeding classes. She also co-facilitates the “Inspiring Birth Stories”/ “Healthy Birth Choices” Series for Choices in Childbirth. Featured on the Discovery Health Channel’s Get Fresh with Sarah Snow, Mary Esther offers an expansive, holistic approach to childbirth preparation, labor support and parenting.

Fight Less, Love More During Pregnancy and Beyond
Caring for a child is hard, but caring for your relationship at the same time is a challenge. When we move from coupledom to parenthood, the daily stress that comes with child-rearing responsibilities can bring out new aspects in yourself and your partner, ones that hinder love and romance.  Suddenly you may find yourself annoyed about little things that never used to bother you. A simple exchange, or harmless response, can turn into a heated debate or worse, an all-out battle. Hard pressed for quality time with our partners and spouses it is easy to fall into a poor communication routine that weakens all relationships.

In this empowering, entertaining, results-driven Fight Less, Love More program you will learn simple 5-minute verbal strategies that will short-circuit arguments, control over-reactions, inspire respect, orchestrate perfect apologies and gain the appreciation you deserve to get the love you want during pregnancy and beyond.

Join us on October 15th in Park Slope to hear Laurie talk www.lauriepuhn.com

Early reservations are advised.

In this workshop, you will hear discussions on vaccine science:

Ø What is current vaccine science and who is funding it and doing
it?

Ø How do vaccines work, and have they done, and do they do what
we’re told they do?

Ø What role do vaccine ingredients play when injected into infants
and children?

Ø What do the ingredients do to our children once they’re injected?

Ø Do vaccines contribute to the development of chronic illnesses
in children?

Ø How do our children get into school if they’re not vaccinated?

Ø How does the immune system work in babies and children?

Attendees will hear some of the answers to these questions, along
with the research that questions whether vaccines are safe and
effective, and whether the scientific process is even at work to prove
the answers to these questions. Attendees will also be asked to look
at the issues that drive us to make the decisions we make, many of
which come to us through fear, bullying, uncertainty, and a lack of
knowledge, and to perhaps think alternatively about how illnesses
occur and disappear.

Choices in Childbirth is headed to Albany to help save midwifery in New York and we need you!

Join us for Lobby Day to support the

Midwifery Modernization Act

Monday, April 12th in Albany

In New York State, your freedom to choose midwifery care is in jeopardy.

Although midwifery is safe for women and babies, access to this care is limited or even nonexistent in many New York state communities.

Even busy, established practices are at risk because of rising insurance costs, perceived competition with obstetrical practices, and legislative restrictions. New legislation, if passed, would protect and expand midwifery options for New York women.

Help us protect this safe, cost-effective health care for women.

You can make a difference by speaking directly to your legislators in person on April 12th and by adding your voice and story to the rally.

THE RALLY:

Have your voice heard!  NYC will join with BirthNet of the Finger Lakes to rally and show Albany how much we care about our midwives.  This is your opportunity to stand up for the midwives who have supported you and your family in some of your most important life experiences. (The Rally will be from noon to 1pm and will be held at “The Well,” an area where we’ll be seen by lots of legislators and their staff.)

Please email kate@choicesinchildbrith.org if you would like to share your inspirational story about access to midwifery care at the rally.

Feel free to bring your children as “proof’ of the value of midwifery care. We should return to the city around 7:30pm.

Please register here through the BirthNet of the Finger Lakes website.

This is a very important day;  please encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to come along.  We look forward to seeing you on the bus!

HOW TO GET THERE:

Choices in Childbirth will be taking a bus to Albany.  We will depart from the city (departure location TBD) at 8:30am. A schedule of events can be found here. You will have the opportunity to meet with a representative from your district and meet up with other “midwifery consumers” who share your commitment to access to midwifery care.

If  you are not able to join us at the rally, you can still help:

1.  Subscribe to Free Our Midwives website

2. Write to THREE Legislators

3. Participate in The Photography Project

4. Attend an Event, Help Plan an Event or Host an Event

5. Talk to Friends and Family

6. Please consider making a small donation to help us cover the costs renting a bus, etc. for Lobby Day. Even $10 will go a long way.

WHY LOBBY DAY IS IMPORTANT FOR NYC FAMILIES:

Any midwife, in any setting, can be immediately put out of business if there is no MD willing to sign a piece of paper.

Our New York City midwives are threatened! At this very moment St. Vincent’s hospital, by far the most midwife friendly hospital in the city, faces closure.  St. Vincent’s is home to over 18 midwives who attended 300 deliveries there in 2009.  Additionally, St. Vincent’s is the only hospital in the New York Metropolitan area that provides  faculty practice coverage and the written practice agreement for homebirth midwives who care for over 600 families each year. Most of the other city hospitals are either not allowing for new private practice midwives or are closed to them entirely. Should the “Midwifery Modernization Act” not pass and if St. Vincent’s is closed, these midwives could have nowhere else to go (and would have to stop practicing).  This would severely limit access and options about the providers with whom we choose to birth.

Where will families go? Who will care for them?

With your help, we can pass this act and allow midwives to practices and collaborate wherever and with whomever they choose.

See NYSALM’s fact sheet about what the Midwifery Modernization Act Means for You.

Did you know?

The current law regulating toxic chemicals was passed in 1976. And it hasn’t changed since, even though 20,000 new chemicals have come onto the market since then. Babies are born pre-polluted with more than 200 industrial chemicals in their bodies when they enter the world. EWG tested the umbilical cord blood of 10 newborn babies and found nearly 300 chemicals, including BPA, fire retardants, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides that were banned more than 30 years ago.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Urgent Call for Human Milk Donations for Haiti Infants

Washington, DC–The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC), International Lactation Consultant Association/United States Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA/USLCA), and La Leche League International (LLLI) are jointly issuing an urgent call for human milk donations for premature infants in Haiti, as well as sick and premature infants in the United States.

This week the first shipment of human milk from mothers in the United States will be shipped to the U.S. Navy ship Comfort stationed outside Haiti. Comfort is currently set up with a neonatal intensive care unit and medical personnel to provide urgent care to victims of the earthquake. An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant stationed at the U.S. Navy base in Bethesda, MD is assisting with providing breast pump equipment and supplies to Comfort. Dr. Erika Beard-Irvine, pediatric neonatologist, is on board to coordinate distribution of the milk to infants in need. HMBANA, USBC, ILCA/USLCA, and LLLI are responding to requests to provide milk for both premature infants and at-risk mothers who have recently delivered babies on board the USNS Comfort, but an urgent need exists for additional donations.
At the current time, the infrastructure to deliver human milk to Haiti infants on land has not yet been established. As soon as that infrastructure is in place, additional donations will be provided to older infants.
Mothers who are willing to donate human milk should contact their regional Mothers’ Milk Bank of HMBANA. A list of regional milk banks is available on the HMBANA Web site at (www.hmbana.org/index/locations).
Currently milk banks are already low on donor milk. New milk donations will be used for Haiti victims as well as to replenish donor supplies to continue to serve sick and premature infants in the United States. Donor milk provides unique protection for fragile preterm infants. Financial donations are also strongly encouraged to allow HMBANA, a nonprofit organization, to continue serving infants in need.
UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Emergency Nutrition Network, and medical professionals all recommend that breastfeeding and human milk be used for infants in disasters or emergencies. Human milk is life-saving due to its disease prevention properties. It is safe, clean, and does not depend on water which is often unavailable or contaminated in an emergency. Relief workers, health care providers, and other volunteers are urged to provide support for breastfeeding mothers to enable them to continue breastfeeding, and to assist pregnant and postpartum women in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding.
For more information, contact HMBANA at 408-998-4550 (www.hmbana.org). Additional information can be provided from the United States Breastfeeding Committee at 202-367-1132 (www.usbreastfeeding.org), ILCA/USLCA at 800-452-2478 (www.ilca.org or www.uslca.org), or La Leche League at 847-519-7730 (www.llli.org).
The USBC is an organization of organizations. Opinions expressed by USBC are not necessarily the position of all member organizations and opinions expressed by USBC member organization representatives are not necessarily the position of USBC.
United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC)
The United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) is an independent nonprofit coalition of 41 nationally influential professional, educational, and governmental organizations. Representing over half a million concerned professionals and the families they serve, USBC and its member organizations share a common mission to improve the Nation’s health by working collaboratively to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Hi everyone!

I Wanted to draw your attention to a great new site about the Midwifery Modernization Act that BirthNet of the Finger Lakes is pulling together — http://freeourmidwives.org/.  I think this is a great resource for info about the MMA and a way to educate consumers about the bill together with the NYSALM site — http://www.nysalm.org/mma.htm.

On their website they have a place to enter your zip code and send a letter to your NYS legislator supporting the Midwifery Modernization Act.

This could be a fun opportunity for someone who wants to try prenatal massage:

Hello All! I am writing because it’s time for my massage class again and I’ll need pregnant volunteers on December 12 from 3:30-5:30 at the Swedish Institute in Manhattan. Preferably, they should be at least 28 weeks pregnant. I love to offer this opportunity to those who might not be able to afford a professional massage and to those who are experiencing common discomforts of pregnancy which may be improved by massage therapy. Please have your clients email midwives@riverandmountain.net or call me at 845-256-5430 and leave a BRIEF message with their names/due dates/telephone numbers. I’ll get back to them on a first come first served basis.

Ciao ya’ll,
Susanrachel

This is a great, well-written piece about midwifery:
Story:
Media out of focus on midwifery

RECENT reports have focused on the rising trend of home births and, unfortunately, many stories have zeroed in on a few tragic situations.

Although we recognize there is a contentious, ongoing debate about the safety of home birth, and we offer our concern and condolences to any parents suffering tragic loss, we are disappointed in the media’s continued implication that all midwifery care is somehow perilous.

Some news from the world of midwifery:

Choices in Childbirth and the New Space for Women’s Health
are teaming up to bring you this fall’s
Birth Community Events and Action Alert!

Welcome back from a sizzling summer… to a fantastic fall

Welcome back from the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! We hope the fall is shaping up nicely, and we’re excited to catch you up on the great events coming up in the fall. We’ve got Sexy Moms, Miles for Midwives, Inspiring Birth Stories, Informational Meeting:Choosing Your Care Provider and more Sexy Moms!

But first:

Spotlight: Petition for Accurate Reporting on All Birth Options

A call for the producers of the Today Show to correct the myths presented in “The Perils of Midwifery”

Two weeks ago, NBC’s The Today Show ran a deeply biased and poorly-researched report entitled “The Perils of Midwifery,” which depicted midwife-assisted homebirth as a dangerous celebrity-driven fad. At Choices in Childbirth and the New Space for Women’s Health, we know better, and we demand accurate reporting on all available birth options.

Like all of you, our hearts break for the McKenzie family and for any parent who experiences the loss of a child.  While honoring the McKenzies and empathizing deeply with them, we ask you to join parents of babies born at home, supporters of informed choices in childbirth and skilled homebirth midwives everywhere in response to the Today Show and its gross misrepresentation of midwife-attended homebirth and the women who choose this option.

Choices in Childbirth has created a petition to unify the voices of consumers who choose home birth for themselves and support the legitimacy of that choice for others.  We will deliver the petition in person to NBC on October 9th, at the close of National Midwifery Week. We’re aiming for 5000 signatures, and we’re hoping that yours will be one of them, so sign right away and pass it on to anyone you know might be interested. Check out the “In the News” section below for a new study about the safety of home=2 0birth.
We will also have a live signing of the petition available at the Miles for Midwives event!

National Midwifery Week: October 4-10, 2009

There’s never been a better time to show your support for midwives and for the families who choose midwifery.  This National Midwifery Week, we honor all the highly educated and experienced midwives and other birthing attendants, who dedicate their lives to helping women to bring children into the world. Thank you for everything you do.

Kick off Celebration: Miles for Midwives
October 3rd, 10am-2pm
Prospect Park (meet at Bartel-Pritchard Square, 15th St and Prospect Park West)
Join us and hundreds of supporters already registered for New York City’s largest celebration of midwifery! To kick off Midwifery Week 2009, Choices in Childbirth and the American College of Nurse-Midwives have paired up to host the 7th Annual Miles for Midwives race, a 5km fun-run (one lap of the park). Support midwifery and healthy families in your community by participating, and be sure to stay for the raffle, with lots of prizes provided by local businesses, and for the BYO Picnic afterwards!

We will have a live signing of the Today Show petition at the event as well!

ves@gmail.com“>Email the Miles for Midwives Team for more information, or click here to register. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sexy Moms Series: Lesbian Parenting
September 30th, 7-9pm
Babeland Brooklyn, 462 Bergen St, Brooklyn

This month’s event will feature Lauren Abrams, a community health center midwife from Park Slope, who will speak about her experience as a lesbian partner raising two children. Inspiring Birth Stories
October 7th, 6:15-8:30pm
14th St. Y, 344 East 14th St

This month, we’re talking about the many faces of birth. Birth can be painful, or painless, or even orgasmic. Where will you give birth? How? With whom? We believe that expectant parents can learn a lot from hearing other parents talk about their experiences. So, at this month’s meeting, new parents will share their birth experiences, talking about their fears and how they found support and ultimately the strength within themselves to labor and birth their babies in a satisfying way.

Please join us for what we hope will be an inspiring and educational ev ening!
Informational Meeting: Choosing Your Care Provider
October 19th, 6:15-8:30pm
Real Birth, 715 9th Ave

When you’re expecting, one of the most important questions you’ll have to answer is who will assist you during childbirth. This meeting aims to present expectant mothers and their partners with all their options, allowing them to make an informed choice about what’s best for them. Bring your questions, because our childbirth educators are ready to answer them.
Sexy Moms Series: Raising Sex-Positive Kids
September 30th, 7-9pm
Babeland Brooklyn 462 Bergen St, Brooklyn

This month’s Sexy Moms meeting will feature sexuality educator Amy Levine, who will share tips about how to talk with your kids about sexuality-related topics. This discussion is for parents who would like to raise sexually healthy children but aren’t sure where to start, what to say or how to keep conversations open and ongoing. This event is jointly sponsored by Babeland, Bump and Park Slope Parents. As always, delicious complimentary refreshments will be served courtesy of Sip Wines and Joyce Bakery.

A new Canadian study shows that, when attended by a qualified midwife, and when supported by a reliable transportation system, low-risk homebirths are as safe as safe as low-risk hospital births.

The Times profiles a clinic in Peru, a country known for its high maternal mortality rates. The clinic combines local traditions with modern technology, and women have responded: whereas in 1999, the clinic was seeing only 6% of birthing mothers in the surrounding area, now it sees 83% of them.

Mothers and midwives in Australia rallied in the nation’s capital to protest an insurance law that would essentially make it illegal for midwives to practice in women’s homes. The result of this rally, and of other resistance to the new law, is that midwives have been guaranteed the right to practice in homes for the next two year s.

Tell ACOG your birth story!

ACOG has a new database to collect anonymous data on “unsuccessful home births.” Let’s derail their plans and flood the database with entries on SUCCESSFUL home births!

It will take less than five minutes, but having even 25 people do it will send a loud and clear message and may force them to take it down due to bad data. At the very least we can force it into the members-only area, where far fewer OBs will bother to fill it out.

Go to http://www.acog. org/survey/ hdComplications. cfm

Below is information about how to fill out the categories—you have to check each one except for the very last or the form won’t go through. Please base the information on your most recent home birth (although you will be limited to checking June, July or August of 2009 for the birth date because of how the database is set up).

State

Choose a month (June, July or August) for your baby’s delivery and 2009 for the year

Gravida (# of times you’ve been pregnant)

Para (# babies you’ve had who were born after 20 weeks)

Maternal Age

Gestational Age (number of weeks pregnant you were when your baby was born)

Problem – Please check OTHER and type in: Healthy baby born at HOME!

Fetal Outcome: Please check: Successful delivery!

Pr e-Arrival length of labor – give the overall length of your labor (you can’t leave it blank or it kicks you back)

Home Attendant – Please check: CPM even if you had a DEM (th e only other choice is “untrained”).

The final question to prevent accidental duplication s is optional.

Thanks for taking a few moments to do this action. It’s quick, easy and best of all – messes with their plans!

Support New York Midwives- Sign this Petition

NYSALM (New York State Association of Licensed Midwives) is urging midwifery consumers and the birth community to support the Midwifery Modernization Act (S.5007/A.08117).  This act would serve as an amendment to the current Midwifery Practice Act, removing the requirement for a written practice agreement between a licensed midwife and a physician in New York State. Currently, physicians are not required to enter into these agreements with midwives, and their refusal to do so for any reason can limit midwives ability to practice despite being  licensed, qualified maternity and women’s health providers.

For more information please go to: http://www.nysalm.org/

Interested in childbirth classes with other homebirth couples?

My husband and I would very much like to connect with other women/couples who are having homebirths.  In that spirit I’m reaching out to you to see if any of your clients are similarly inclined.  We want to arrange a childbirth class for homebirthers with Natashia Fuksman, either in her studio or at our home in the East Village.  (Unfortunately her classes regularly meet on Tues evening, which is the one night we can’t do, so this would be on a Mon, Wed, or weekend.)  If you know of any people who may be interested, please pass along my email or phone: 212 254 7560.
Thanks

The store, the first of its kind on the east side of Manhattan, will be a “one stop shop” for expectant and new parents interested in breastfeeding, offering a full-line of nursing products and resources, as well as classes on lactation-related topics taught by Certified Lactation Consultants.

“For a city as big and densely populated as New York with 125,506 births in 2007, and 85% of New York City women initiating breastfeeding, it was amazing to me how few resources were offered for breastfeeding moms,” says store founder and president Amanda Cole.  “I know from my own experience that breastfeeding can be challenging and stressful. I didn’t think that finding a store to assist in breastfeeding should be challenging and stressful too.”

Cole conceived of the idea for Yummy Mummy after the birth of her daughter.  Like other new moms, she saw a real need and demand for a nursing specialty store to help mothers hoping to facilitate or enhance their breastfeeding experience.

Yummy Mummy will offer every essential a nursing mother needs - from nursing bras, pads and pumps, to reference books and DVDs. And to provide a supportive community for breastfeeding moms, Yummy Mummy will host weekly breastfeeding classes for parents and expectant parents on topics like “Perfecting Your Baby’s Latch” and “Breastfeeding 101” as well as breastfeeding support groups for new parents to share and learn in a friendly supportive atmosphere.

In addition to the store location, Yummy Mummy will be available online at www.yummymummystore.com <http://www.yummymummystore.com/>; , which will feature a gift registry and community board.

Due to increasing scientific research, the World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics and Surgeon General of the United States recommend human milk as the natural food of choice for infants during the first year of life.   According to the Center for Disease, the benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mom are vast and include protection against gastrointestinal and respiratory problems for baby and quicker post-partum weight loss for mom. Furthermore, formula costs between $900 to
$4,700 the first year, while additional food costs for the breastfeeding mother runs approximately $120 per year.

About Yummy Mummy
Yummy Mummy is the first and only breastfeeding specialty store on the east side of Manhattan. Yummy Mummy’s mission is to facilitate and enrich the breastfeeding experience by providing the information, personal attention, and products and services that mothers need to make breastfeeding enjoyable, rewarding and stress-free. Yummy Mummy will serve20as a gathering place for soon-to-be and new moms seeking support, guidance and “sisterhood.”

About Amanda Cole, President and Store Owner of Yummy Mummy
Amanda Cole, the president of Yummy Mummy, will run the store’s daily operations. Prior to opening Yummy Mummy, Cole worked in brand management at Novartis Consumer Health, most recently on the Theraflu and Comtrex brands. She earned her MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 2006 and her certificate as a Lactation Educator from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). A native to the Upper East Side, Cole lives just two blocks from her childhood home with her husband and daughter.
